A film project which took viewers on a personal journey through Northumbria’s ‘Secret’ Beautiful Bogs has won the IUCN UK Peatland Programme’s competition for the most inspiring communication of a peatland issue. Northumberland National Parks and the Haltwhistle Film Project submitted an engaging film which imaginatively connects the viewer with the story of local peat bogs. The makers of ‘Our Beautiful Bogs – Northumbria’s Peatland Secrets’ won the opportunity to spend a day with the 2020 Vision Photo Team, an exciting new visual media initiative.
Shortlisted entries to ComPEAT included a vast range of projects and initiatives from published books to mobile phone applications and fine art.
Second place went to the ‘LIFE Active Blanket Bog in Wales’ education project. Judges felt this project was well targeted and tangible, using personal experience to achieve in a myriad of outcomes from artwork to poetry.
The Pulumon Project, a graphically strong entry with a contemporary feel which came third, promotes ecological restoration over a large area of the Cambrian Mountains entered by the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust.
The winners were announced at the IUCN UK Peatland Programme’s ‘Investing in Peatlands’ Conference in Durham, where the top three entries took home a case of our specially brewed conference beer, ‘Old Sphagnum’, from the local Allendale Brewery.
Programme Director Clifton Bain said “The aim of our competition was to showcase successful, ambitious and creative initiatives that communicate the importance of peatlands. We wanted entries that would captivate their audience and lead to awareness raising and, ultimately, action and engagement, and in the winners, that’s exactly what we got.”
