The IUCN UK Peatland Programme recently commissioned a report into the opportunity costs associated with peatland restoration from Andrew Moxey of Pareto Consulting.
Although written prior to the UK referendum on EU membership, the report makes a number of policy recommendations that are not only relevant whilst we continue to receive CAP from Europe but also pertinent to keep in mind when designing any future payment structures for land use. The report also examines other potential costs associated with peatland restoration such as incompatible land uses, animal welfare and loss of commercial value.
Further discussion is planned to take these findings forward in the development and promotion of the Peatland Code alongside discussions around agriculture payments in general. Any views on the paper are welcome and should be sent to Emma Goodyer (email@example.com).
