Our latest species showcase features the black grouse—an upland bird now on the UK Red List after decades of decline driven by habitat loss, fragmentation and changes in land use. Black grouse depend on a rich mosaic of habitats—peatlands, wet flushes, grasslands, and scattered scrub or young woodland—that provide seasonal food, shelter and breeding sites, highlighting the need for well‑connected habitats that allow movement and dispersal.
The new showcase also highlights ongoing conservation efforts in the UK. In the Southern Uplands of Scotland, a landscape‑scale project is working to halt rapid declines, whilst in the North Pennines, decades of habitat improvements by farmers, landowners and conservation partners have increased lek numbers.
