Throughout 2024, the Peatland Programme is celebrating peatland biodiversity through a series of monthly showcases featuring a particular peatland species or species group.
Our latest species showcase focuses on the iconic cottongrass which stand out on peatlands at the start of summer due to its distinctive white, fluffy seed heads that resemble cotton wool. Cottongrasses play an important role as food plants, indicators of peatland health and in peatland restoration. However, they have become locally scarce in some areas and the showcase also explores a project working to reintroduce one species to Oxfordshire.
