Peat-Metal is a NERC-funded project, working towards addressing the global challenge of mitigating risk of disturbances releasing heavy metals stored in contaminated peatlands. The project focused specifically on fire related disturbances, the associated heavy metal mobilisation risk and potential mitigation strategies through peatland restoration.
Peat-Metal aimed to build an international network of peatland researchers to share expertise and ideas, progressing aresearch agenda seeking to optimise ecosystem restoration as a means of limitin heavy metal mobilisation for the benefit of human and ecosystem health.
In 2024, the Peat-Metal project ran a series of workshops and webinars, including:
20th March 2024 – Peat Metal introduction: Restoration of the Sudbury peatlands
24th April 2024 – Unravelling the Toxic Secrets of Peatlands: PIPES overview (Pollutants In PEatlands: from sink to Source).
15th May 2024 – After the smoke clears: assessing and predicting post-fire impacts to water quality and the role of wildfire ash.
12th June 2024 – Post-wildfire heavy metal mobilisation in a contaminated temperate peatland.
