As part of the current Environment Agency consultation on Significant Water Management Issues for the water environment a Peatland Degradation narrative has been produced.
This is the first time peatlands have been formally recognised within the River Basin Management Plan (RBMP) process and is a significant step forward in integrating peatland restoration into river basin plans. The narrative can be used to help inform approaches to RBMP through the Programme of Measures, as well as to inform restoration bids and Price Review planning. The primary focus of this report is water quality; however, peatland restoration offers nature-based solutions for people, nature recovery and the water environment which should not be overlooked when designing measures for functional river basins.
The narrative can be updated periodically so new evidence can be incorporated.
