When can I begin my peatland restoration?
As a minimum, your project needs to be registered on the UK Land Carbon Registry before you start any restoration work. Ideally, you will begin restoration works once the project has achieved project plan validation. However, you may also begin restoration prior to completion of project plan validation. In this case there is a risk of not achieving project plan validation and that risk is for of the project.
How long do I have to complete restoration?
Restoration can be done over two years for one single Peatland Code project.
What if I cannot complete restoration within two years?
You can request an extension if necessary. These are considered on a case-by-case basis by the Peatland Code team in liaison with the validation/verification body. All evidence for the delay will be discussed, and extensions are more likely to be granted if the delay was beyond the project’s control. If your project is experiencing delays, please contact peatlandcode@iucn.org.uk to inform the Peatland Code team as soon as possible.
Is there public funding available to help me with my restoration?
The Peatland Code allows up to 85% the project’s restoration and management costs over the project duration to be publicly funded.
Depending on where in the UK your site is, the following funding sources are available:
Does the Peatland Code provide restoration advice to projects?
No. Individuals involved in the delivery of the restoration and management activities are required to have the relevant expertise for undertaking a peatland restoration project. The Peatland Code team make sure your project conforms to the Peatland Code and follows the guidance and field protocol but does not offer advice on restoration methods or techniques.
