From Data to Decision: Promoting Sustainable Peatland Management in the Congo Basin through Hydrological Modelling and Monitoring Tools

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will host a side event as part of the Congo Basin Forum 2025, which will be held from 10 to 13 June in Kinshasa.

With the theme "From Data to Decision: Promoting Sustainable Peatland Management in the Congo Basin through Hydrological Modelling and Monitoring Tools", the event will highlight the development and/or application of three scientific tools to support the sustainable management of peatlands in the Congo Basin – one of the world's most important reservoirs of carbon and biodiversity.

This interactive session will include:

  • The presentation of the hydrological modelling and decision support system for the peatlands of the Congo Basin;
  • A demonstration of mapping and monitoring tools;
  • Sharing lessons learned from other wetland regions, including peatlands across six continents.

Join us to explore how data and research are integrated into tools accessible to relevant stakeholders, to enable more optimal decision-making for sustainable peatland management in the Congo Basin.
