Strathy (Langwell) Peatland Restoration

Introduction

This area was identified as having a particularly dense drainage pattern and hydrology was heavily modified. The area forms the catchment of a tributary burn on the Langwell Water. The burn is accessible to Atlantic Salmon and is used for spawning and provides juvenile habitat. This project was funded by the Peatland Action Fund.

Description

Gently rolling moorland, predominantly blanket bog

Project Aims

Re wetting of peatland site and restoration of hydrology. Carbon storage and increased sequestration of carbon.

Restoration Delivered

92.35 km of drains were blocked and reprofiled. 1450 m of hag was reprofiled.

Site Activity

All ditches were reprofiled and blocked using 360 excavators and low pressure bog tracks.
