That’s LIFE – Restoring the Humberhead Peatlands End of Project Conference

Doncaster, South Yorkshire, 15th - 16th May

In 2014, funding was secured from the European Union's LIFE+ programme to help the restoration of the Humberhead Peatlands, which comprises Thorne, Hatfield, Goole, and Crowle Moors and is designated as a National Nature Reserve (NNR).

During the 20th Century the integrity of the bog and its unique biodiversity were severely threatened by mechanised peat extraction and associated drainage. The project called That's LIFE – Restoring the Humberhead Peatlands was launched in July 2014 and will continue to the end of June 2018. The project has extended the area of peat bog habitat under active restoration and helped provide a long-term future for the rare plants, birds and insects that have evolved to live on this unique wetland habitat and resulted in it being designated a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Special Protection Area (SPA). The project has also researched and monitored the bog's unique bird and insect populations which will help inform similar restoration projects elsewhere. The completion of the project will leave a lasting legacy for the UK's largest lowland raised bog.

The end of Project Conference aims to celebrate everything that the project has achieved, share knowledge and best practice, and look towards the future of bog restoration in Europe. The conference programme will include presentations, workshops and site visits delivered by members of the LIFE+ Project team, the project partners and bog restoration experts. Indeed, we are very lucky to have secured as our keynote speaker Greta Gaudig, Director of the Greifswald Mire Centre in Germany, which is the science-policy-practice interface for all peatland related questions globally.

The conference programme will include presentations and site visits delivered by members of the LIFE+ Project team, the project partners and bog restoration experts. For further details and to register please visit our registration site.
