Funding announced for greenhouse gas reduction solutions on peatlands

The UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology is seeking proposals for projects up to £75,000 to advance research to transform degraded UK peatlands into effective greenhouse gas removal (GGR) systems.

Committee on Climate Change (CCC) 7th Carbon Budget Report - a response from IUCN UK Peatland Programme

The IUCN UK Peatland Programme welcomes this week the publication of the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) 7th Carbon Budget Report. It is now five years since the 6th report and it is useful to see the progress that has been made towards Net Zero, but also to understand the challenges that lie ahead for UK peatlands. 

New species showcase - Water vole

Continuing the spotlight on peatland biodiversity, our first Species Showcase of 2025 is the Water vole. A species that has been subject to rapid decline in recent decades, it can be found in lowland fens dominated by reedbeds and also in ditches and rivers surrounding upland peatlands across the UK.

Adoption of University of Cumbria PhD student’s carbon calculator brings national and international significance

This week University of Cumbria and Barker and Bland Ltd.’s innovative carbon calculator has been adopted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature UK Peatland Programme (IUCN UK PP) for use in the UK Peatland Code.
