During March over 600,000 sphagnum moss plugs plants, covering over 500 hectares, have been planted across the Peak District National Park and South Pennines Special Area of Conservation. 

IUCN Global Councillor showcases UK peatland conservation at Global Peatland Initiative Meeting in Congo

On 22nd March, as part of the third meeting of the Global Peatland Initiative (GPI), IUCN Global Councillor and Co-Chair of the IUCN UK Peatland Programme, Jonathan Hughes, will be showcasing progress and ongoing work relating to the management of peatlands in the UK.

Butterfly Conservation launch new boardwalk at Braehead Moss

A brand new boardwalk facility at Braehead Moss nature reserve in South Lanarkshire was officially opened on 10th March 2018 by local constituency MSP Aileen Campbell. The boardwalk has been created as part of Butterfly Conservation Scotland’s Lanarkshire’s Large Heaths and Mosses – Restoring Precious Peatlands project.

Peatland ACTION - funding round 2018/19 now open

Peatland ACTION opened to applications for the 2018/19 funding round on Monday 19th March 2018. They are keen to have as many projects ready to deliver in 2018/19 and wish to encourage applications for longer term projects.  Whilst they will not be able to approve the future years of multi-year applications, they can make the initial assessment and approve as and when future funding becomes available. They hope this will shorten future approval times and make it easier for contractors to plan and deliver work on the ground.

Peat Partners Share Expertise

Finnish peat restoration project, Hydrology LIFE, will visit its twinned UK project, Pennine PeatLIFE, to share expertise and experience. A dozen peatland specialists from Finland and environmental network, Eurosite, will be joining Pennine PeatLIFE in the North Pennines AONB on 12th March. The European visitors are keen to learn about how the project is restoring peatlands in the North Pennines, Yorkshire Dales, Nidderdale and the Forest of Bowland, and how they might apply any techniques  to their own project.
